An Introduction to Pet Health Care
Posted Under: Uncategorized
For people who have pets, they’re a part of the family. This is why pet health care is more important than ever. Visiting the vet can be expensive, but knowing the basics to keep your companion healthy may help by reducing the need for medication and surgery in later life.
Bigger animals such as cats and dogs must be vaccinated when they are puppies and kittens. Although this is expensive, it cannot be forgotten. However, to save money and heartache in the long run by avoiding life threatening diseases, vaccination is vital.
Cats and dogs should also be wormed and treated for fleas and ticks. Again, this may seem expensive but it’s better to be safe than sorry and it’ll ensure your pet is happy.
Making sure you pet is happy and comfortable is very important in pet health care. All animals need a suitable place to sleep. Cats may not stick to one single place, instead choosing to curl up on your sofa. However, dogs should be given a bed. Rabbits and hamsters need a warm bed made from appropriate material too. Although hamster bedding can be bought in pet shops, they are just as happy with shredded paper.
The food your pet eats will also have an impact on their health. Although it may sound like a joke, pet obesity is a big problem, so their food needs careful consideration. Fatty milk isn’t great for cats, so save it for treats only. It’s easy to get into the habit of feeding your dog human food from the table. Whilst a little human food will do no harm, think about the amount he’s eating. Fresh vegetables are a favourite of rabbits, and varying their diet will do them good.
Exercise is very important for pets. Even small hamsters need to be able to run about, so you should give them the biggest cage you can. Hamsters should be taken out of their cage to exercise; the plastic balls you can buy in pet shops are great for them. Be careful though, hamsters are great escape artists and easily lost if you take your eye off them. Although cats will get their own exercise, they love to stay active with toys at home. Some more pampered cats might not be keen to go outside, especially in the Winter, but it is for their own good to give them some gentle encouragement to spend time outdoors. Since most dogs love walking, they are the easiest pet to exercise. Giving your dog the right amount of exercise is vital. Generally, you can assume the bigger the dog, the longer his walk should be.
These are very simple considerations which are very effective in giving your pet a healthy lifestyle. Pets should always see a vet once a year for a check up, but making sure your animal’s life is as healthy as it can be will aid your pet health care regime. Following this advice could save you a lot of money, and more importantly, heartache by saving your animal from becoming unwell in the first place.
